After completing this series, participants will be able to:

  1. Build a business case
    • Explain the linkage between an organization’s strategy, change initiative and the role of the business case
    • Complete the non-financial sections of a business case and support the preparation of the financial analysis
    • Convert the intangible benefits of a solution into the tangible, quantitative benefits and use them in the business case
    • Recognize the application of the principals of good data presentation
    • Identify crucial success factors and risk for a change initiative
  2. Use a business case to build a project charter
    • Understand how the elements of a business case transfer to a project charter
    • Recognize the audience for a project charter
    • Appreciate the elements of an effective project charter
    • Learn to critique your own charters with a best practice checklist
    • Write a project charter based on business case
  3. Understand how project leadership is directly related to your ability to motivate people
    • Develop a promotional lens to view and motivate people in your role as a project manager
    • Devise an immediate plan to increase your influence as a project manager
    • Understand the Key Drivers of change
    • Appreciate why projects efforts fail
  4. Identify key stakeholders for smoother transitions
    • Understand the connection between projects and change
    • Recognize your Sphere of Influence
    • Utilize the 3 Steps of Change Implementation
    • Analyze your audience and individualize communication for maximum engagement

There are no prerequisites for these courses.

Class cancellations must be done fourteen full business days before the class start date.  No refunds for cancellations of less than fourteen full business days.  No Shows/Missed Classes – Refunds will not be issued for any missed class.  Late Arrivals/Early Departures – Metropolitan State University reserves the right to decrease continuing education units issued for late arrivals and early departures.  Written confirmation will be sent to you a week before class.  If a class is canceled, you will be contacted by phone, mail, or email.  Metropolitan State University reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as weather (a full refund will be granted).

Length: The courses in the series are varying lengths; the whole series is 5 days in length.

This course is part of the Executing Successful Projects Certificate

After completing this series, participants will be able to:

  1. Integrate the right facilitation tool for stakeholder input on project initiatives
    • Analyze situations and audience to choose the correct facilitation tools
    • Understand techniques to gather information
    • Engage participants in constructive group discussions to evaluate situations and problem solve
  2. Leverage the conflict experienced by your project team for a better results
    • Understand the five actions to handle conflict
    • Choose conflict strategy based on the situation
    • Understand win-lose scenarios and their cost
    • Recognize win-win possibilities
  3. Explain the change curve, its phases, and how it rolls out
    • Identify your go-to reaction to change and how that affects your work
    • Define your role in helping people navigate through change
    • Analyze change situations and generate plans to allow for adjustment to change

If you are new to project management, we strongly suggest the course Succeeding with Projects as a first step to get the most from this series.

If you have a background in project management, this series will be valuable to you.

After completing this series, participants will be able to:

  1. Make a choice on the best approach for a project between traditional (waterfall) project or an agile project
  2. Understand the role of the project manager through each phase of a project: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.
  3. Build a common understanding project terminology and techniques
  4. Increase a project’s potential by applying project management tools and processes
  5. Leverage critical teamwork techniques to get your project team to work together
  6. Engage project stakeholders and sponsors
  7. Understand when and how to use project templates
  8. Describe the difference between project management and project methodology
  9. Define project roles and responsibilities
  10. Apply common projects tools to
    • Identify stakeholders
    • Initiate a charter
    • Define scope
    • Build a schedule
    • Determine a budget
    • Design communication and risk plans
  11. Differentiate between Agile and other frameworks of the philosophy
  12. Understand, at a high level, the main agile framework being used in today’s marketplace
  13. Determine if additional training in agile techniques would be worthwhile
